Research Framework

The core scientific question addressed by the KPM is: ‘How are public tasks defined, organized and managed?’ To investigate, KPM examines the institutions and actors involved in the fulfilment of tasks and their relationships with politics, business and society. The primary activity, which lays the necessary scientific foundation for education and training as well as applied research and services, is basic research. The KPM sees itself as a university institute that takes up the challenge of combining basic research with practical benefits. In this respect, application-orientated research and services in consulting and further education ensure the necessary, continuous practical relevance to the subject of research.

The research structures of the KPM should help to prioritize the following three goals:

‒ Our basic research achieves international visibility and recognition in the respective research fields and scientific communities.
‒ Our application-oriented research finds recognition and application in organizational practice.
‒ Our activities contribute to the training of high-quality, internationally competitive young professionals in science, administration and society.

Committed to a multi-disciplinary, pluralistic administrative science, the KPM makes use of various theoretical traditions and methodological approaches. While basic research primarily serves to develop theory, application-orientated research and services focus in particular on answering practical questions. We pass on the findings from our activities to target groups (e.g. scientific journals, conferences, further training, lectures, media appearances).
